Proof of work, which is currently used by Bitcoin, requires miners to solve complex mathematical puzzles to validate transactions and secure the network. This process consumes a significant amount of energy, as miners need powerful hardware and compete to solve these puzzles. On the other hand, proof of stake, which is used by cryptocurrencies like Ethereum 2.0, selects validators based on the number of coins they hold and are willing to 'stake' as collateral. This mechanism eliminates the need for energy-intensive mining and reduces energy consumption significantly. Validators are chosen to create new blocks and validate transactions based on their stake, rather than computational power. Therefore, proof of stake is considered to be more energy-efficient compared to proof of work.
